100th Anniversary of Japan-Türkiye Diplomatic Relations
January, 4, 2024
In 2024, Japan and Turkey celebrate the 100th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, established on August 6, 1924, following Japan’s ratification of the Treaty of Lausanne. The opening of Japan's first embassy in the Middle East in Turkey (1925) underscores the significance of the bilateral relationship. Despite the challenges of World War II, Japan and Turkey maintained their friendship, and Turkey played a key role in Japan’s post-war return to the international community by supporting Japan’s admission to the United Nations in 1956.
In recent years, Japan-Turkey relations have flourished across various fields, including politics, economy, disaster prevention, and culture. Notable collaborations include the construction of the Second Bosphorus Bridge and the Marmaray Tunnel in Istanbul, supported by Japanese economic cooperation. In times of natural disasters, such as the 1999 Marmara earthquake and the 2011 Great East Japan earthquake, both nations have supported each other, embodying the proverb, "A friend in need is a friend indeed."
